Recycling -- It's the Law
In the City of Altoona, Hollidaysburg Borough, Logan Township, and Tyrone Borough, residents (including those that live in apartments), commercial establishments, and institutions are required to separate and properly prepare designated materials for recycling.

Curbside Recycling Schedule for Mandated Municipalities

Residential Curbside Recycling
For residents, the following items must be kept separate from your garbage and placed in a recycling bin for curbside recycling:

· Aluminum cans
· Steel (tin) cans
· Clear, brown, and green glass bottles and jars
· #1 - #7 Plastic Bottles ONLY
· Newspapers
· Magazines and catalogs

·

Mixed Office Paper
· Yard waste must also be kept separate and recycled. It can be
taken to the compost site or set out for curbside collection during any of the publicized municipal collection dates.

Commercial and Institutional Recycling
Commercial and institutional establishments in the City of Altoona, Hollidaysburg Borough, Logan Township, and Tyrone Borough must recycle:

· Aluminum cans
· Steel (tin) cans
· Clear, brown, and green glass bottles and jars
· #1 - #7 Plastic Bottles ONLY
· Newspapers
· Magazines and catalogs
· Mixed Office Paper
· Yard waste
· Corrugated cardboard

Proper Preparation
If you mix recyclables with waste, you're just throwing it all away! Please remember all items must be properly prepared:

· Empty and rinse cans, glass bottles, and plastic bottles and jugs.
· Remove and discard all caps and lids. (Labels may remain on the cans, bottles, and jugs.)
· Flatten metal cans and plastic bottles and jugs, if possible.
· Do not break glass bottles.
· Put newspapers in paper bags or bundle with twine, and keep them separate from bagged or bundled magazines and catalogs.
· Place newspapers, magazines, and catalogs next to recycling bin.
· Keep all paper products dry.

You must place your recyclables at the curb on your garbage collection day. The hauler must collect specified, properly prepared, recyclable items and keep them separate from all garbage collected.

RESIDENTS, COMMERCIAL ESTABLISHMENTS, INSTITUTIONS
AND WASTE HAULERS THAT FAIL TO ABIDE BY THE ABOVE
LISTED RECYCLING MANDATES ARE SUBJECT TO
FINES UP TO $1000.00 PER OCCURRENCE.

Voluntary Curbside Recycling
Currently, three non-mandated communities, Antis Township, Blair Township, and Snyder Township, have opted for a voluntary curbside collection program. If you reside in any of these municipalities and choose to recycle curbside, the service must be provided to you by your garbage hauler.

Please remember to properly prepare all items to be recycled:
·
Empty and rinse cans, glass bottles & jars, #1 and #2 plastic bottles & jugs. Remove and discard lids.
·
Metal cans and plastic bottles & jugs may be flattened after rinsing.
·
Put newspapers & phonebooks in paper bags or bundle with twine. Keep all materials dry.
